In 1921 Torrance became an incorporated city in Los Angeles County, just a short nine years after its founding in 1912.  Located right on the coast, and sharing a border with Los Angeles, Gardena, and Palos Verdes, Torrance has a temperate climate year-round, with low humidity and only 12.55 inches of rain per year.   Much of the industry in the city revolves around agriculture, manufacturing and petroleum.  The city began to grow by leaps and bounds after the Second World War, and new housing developments were built in the 50’s and 60’s to accommodate the influx.  During the recessions in the 1970’s and 2000’s, Torrance experienced citywide deindustrialization and economic downturn, but has remained strong, and culturally diverse.

Torrance is home to several parks and landmarks, including: Wilson Park, Madrona Marsh Wildlife Preserve, and Torrance Beach Park on the Pacific Ocean.  The Armed Forces Parade has been running down Torrance Boulevard every year since 1960, and is known as the “longest running military parade sponsored by a city.”  One of the largest malls in the United States calls Torrance home, Del Amo Fashion Center is a huge 2.5 million square feet of retail space, and is still growing to this day.

Two major Japanese car makers have their headquarters in Torrance, Toyota and Honda, as does Robinson Helicopters, Honeywell, King’s Hawaiian Bakery, and Mitsuwa Marketplace.  There is also an ExxonMobile Refinery located at the northern edge of the city, which produces the majority of Southern California’s gasoline.  With all of the industry, traffic, and pollution in the city, health concerns can be expected.
